Tendinitis is a type of inflammation that affects the tendons. Tendons connect muscle tissues to bones. Tendinitis commonly occurs in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle and foot. Tendinitis can be caused by injury or overuse. It can also occur in areas of calcium deposition. While an orthopedic doctor can develop a customized treatment plan for your exact symptoms, here are three common treatments.
What Treatments Are Available for Tendinitis?
- Home Therapies & Medication
Most orthopedic doctors recommend a conservative approach when symptoms of tendinitis first present. RICE, which means rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can be beneficial for soothing pain and stiffness caused by inflammation. You may also be advised to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, including ibuprofen. Immobilizing with a splint or brace or using straps or crutches may be helpful. - Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can be used to decrease inflammation, increase muscle strength and stretch tendons using targeted exercises. Eccentric stretching has been shown to be particularly helpful for people experiencing tendon inflammation. This involves exercises that facilitate active muscle lengthening, as opposed to muscle shortening. A physical therapist may also use modalities like ultrasound and electrical stimulation for treatment of tendinitis. - Surgery
It is nonsurgical treatments fail to provide relief, your orthopedic doctor may recommend surgery. Surgery may include removing degenerated or damaged tendon, excising irritating bone spurs or calcium deposits and repairing the tendon. Irreversible damage to tendons may significantly limit repair options so it is important to see your orthopedic doctor early if you have persistent pain that does not resolve with nonsurgical treatment.
